for the love of flowers

watercolour on montval

17 x 73 cm

Have gone back to my old habits of tearing my paper into thin strips.

i may save on paper, unfortunately framing can be costly when ordered custom made.

It also seems that with the official arrival of summer and all the beautiful blooms available and flourishing in the garden sees me very much inspired, returning to painting flowers big time.

I am hoping that during the holiday break I can spare a little more time devoting myself to these and adding to my

It feels like i have been away from them for ages.

i feel an agapanthus coming on!

Gardenias are also on the list.

A student in class bought in this cream Poinsettia
which took my fancy.
Breaking down the shapes that make up this wonderful flower…
what we think is the flower is in fact the top leaves of the plant called bracts.
This one happened to be a white variety.
The actual flowers are the small yellow buds found in the centre of these colourful leaves.

The Iris is such a simple elegant
it has a complexity which is a painter's delight.
I wanted to paint it to show its unmistakable beauty in colour.

On the wild side, this was painted with purely the paint in mind.

Splashes of red, orange and purple were used to create an interesting backdrop for this magnolia painted in a contemporary style.

I painted this while staying in the little village of Leura, in the beautiful Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia, a place where i escape, to get away from the fast pace of the city.

The magnolia comes in many different varieties all gorgeous in their own right.
I love them all, along with their delicate perfume.

Have painted many of them and have them about my walls. As I adore most things vintage, this one in sepia tones gives it an antique feel.

These flowers have become an addiction and have even started purchasing them from other painters/artists.

The fragrance from these is what I wait for each year.

When the first milky white flowers appear I rush out and pick the blooms and place them in shallow bowls all over the house.

A full bowl in the foyer is a must and as their perfume fills the air you immediately think, ahhhh... The fragrance of summer!
