Mrs Willow aka Sandra Wilson comes to Sydney

My first words to Sandra when i laid eyes on her and hugged her were

"You are real!"

Sandra and i intially met through an online art forum in 2007, and ever since then have been comunicating with each other the last three years through redbubble, our art blogs and video link through skype.

It was indeed surreal and a thrill to finally meet when she visited in Sydney last week.

Knowing Sandra has been wonderful, for she is always there with kind words of encouragement,

time, wisdom and balanced viewpoint.

She is only too happy to cast her artistic eye over my work and i value this

for she is an accomplished artist working in many mediums, mainly in watercolour.

Most of all i greatly appreciate her friendship

and i have come to love her for all the support and love she extends to me.

Safe trip home Sandra

and i hope that one day i too can visit you in country Victoria.

My apologies for not showing anything new here.
I was revisiting some of my past work today and

thought i'd post this one again with some words i recently read.

When people want to be insulting,
all they need do is accuse someone of having their head in the clouds

or being lost in a fantasy.

It's a cheap and easy form of attack,

and it is so unfair.

Reality is different for each one of us.

Nobody can put their hand on their heart and say,

'I understand what's actually going on in this Universe.'

We can always try to influence the opinions that others have of us, but we cannot control these.

We have no power to force people to see us in a particular way

if they have already made up their mind to do so without taking the time to know us.

Nor can we afford to worry too much if they get the wrong idea about
who we are and what we are all about.

If you are doing your best, your best will be good enough.

i haven't painted anything since losing Bu, and haven't had the motivation or inspiration to do much of anything except for the necessary stuff which needs doing.
anyhow.. thought i'd re-post this watercolour i painted in August to move my blog along, as well as having a play with installing some music.
some time ago i mentioned listening to a compilation called Buddha-bar (of which they have many), i managed to find a few of my favourite tracks with visuals, care of YouTube. The first featuring here, Gesso's Guitar by Mystic Rhythms Band appeals to me on many levels - so was a must have with its many amazingly beautiful photographs featuring the planet which rules the Zodiac sign Cancer. Put together by Melanie, it is her tribute to the Moon, and i find it simply stunning.
i guess all i can say is it inspired me to upload something - even if it meant an old painting which you have probably already seen.

This resulted in just play with watercolours early this morning.

An old palette containing some dregs of prussian blue, cerulean blue, light red and warm sepia too good to just wash out in my cleaning frenzy, thought i'd just dabble, like playing in mud as a child - terra e acqua - soil and water.

Remembering briefly what it was like to wallow in mud,
feeling the grit mixed with water emulsify between fingers and toes.
Making all sorts of shapes, squeezing as you go,
not caring for the mess you made,
despite being told so.

Remembering only the feeling,

of how good it was to play!

It's messy now i know, and i tell myself so.

Perhaps one day i will seriously attempt a seascape with the aid of a reference photo.

I would very much like to do this (sigh) someday, for today however, i simply wanted to play with the colours of soil and of water.

The present sees me drawing more so than painting in watercolours.

Perhaps it’s the convenience of just picking up a pencil and following your thoughts, as is the case here.

Beginning immediately on being inspired by the texture and classic lines of an urn, the beauty of a violin, or gazing into the adoring eyes of a cat as it looks up whilst curled in your lap.

Although this is a tad on the dark side, i am still managing to express myself creatively, i see this as a positive thing.

shhh.. important research in progress

Following on from his duties as Artistic Director, Chocky has now taken on a very serious research role.

Spending much of his day pawing through copious amounts of literature hoping to grasp and gain a fuller understanding of colour and fundamentals of colour theory.

Using the internet assisting him in his quest to becoming an expert in this field unprecedented by any of his kind, Chocky is one determined little guy and nobody is going to stand in his way.

All this, and spending hours on end watching back to back YouTube videos on How To Paint in Watercolour - this one is his personal favourite!

I'm having great difficulties getting in any computer time, trusting you understand and my sincere apologies for tardy replies to comments here and to emails, also with visiting blogs.

i'm a huge fan of the orchid species, owing much of my collection to the generosity of my dear friend Graeme Banks.

Graeme along with his son David Banks, are orchid growers and run Hills District Orchids in Sydney. He makes sure that i am never without the Australian Orchid Review magazine, sending me a copy hot off the press as his son David is the current editor. Every edition of this magazine contains many interesting articles & pictures promoting these incredibly beautiful flowers.

my violin before the fine tuners were taken off the G and D strings by my teacher who i affectionately and respectfully call maestro!

after a lengthy practice session, sat down and spent some time making a loose pencil sketch, it looks askew as a result of having the instrument sitting to my left side instead of having it directly out in front as most would when drawing. Not that this bothers me much, however as the violin is an instrument of great symmetrical beauty i have committed a ‘crime’ to the luthiers craft, my sincere apologies, i am after all ‘getting to know you’ the instrument that is.

being winter in the southern hemisphere at present, this was inspired by the deciduous trees about the place which lay dormant and are senza foglie – which is Italian for without leaves.

using masking fluid to leave the bare branches of the trees in negative so it left me free to play around with a wash of indigo blue, antwerp blue & permanent crimson, was just the ticket to ease my journey back into painting and reconnecting with watercolour.

i was not after a perfect wash and i really like to create cauliflowers, they fascinate me and i stand there captivated as they happen.

the moon was then added in before rubbing back the masking fluid to reveal the effect.

i’m not sure whether to call this a treescape or landscape nevertheless it was just an experimental exercise which i kept simple so as to get me going in a positive direction whilst utilizing a negative effect.

After a long break from painting, the weekend finally saw me bring brush to paper.

i feel i have lost that connection with the fluidity of watercolour and so was overwhelmed with thoughts of starting.

i have also been without my computer for the last month as it had a major meltdown and needed hard drive replacement, so i am feeling overwhelmed on many fronts!

my apologies to you all for my long silence, hoping and trust you understand, it may take me a while to catch up with everything and to come around to see what you have been doing.

NEWS!!

Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd visits Bankstown Arts Centre

On Thursday May 7, 2009, PM Kevin Rudd popped in to the Arts Centre in Bankstown where the Bankstown Art Society has its home, gallery and studio spaces.

Our humble little 'watercolour group' who get together each week to paint and share in our love of art along with our tutor Norma was going to get a visit from the PM.. huh? - yeah right!!!

Are you serious?!

You can imagine the surprise... For obvious security reasons these visits are not usually announced in advance.

PM Kevin Rudd's visit, which included a brief tour of the Bankstown Arts Centre in Sydney, was to announce $3.15 million in funding to go towards the redevelopment of the centre.
This along with plans to foster the Arts in the area, will go a long way to improving this facility. Bankstown Art Society and its members i'm sure are all delighted by this announcement as they have known about this redevelopment project for some time, perhaps Bankstown City Council will announce a date for this work and proposals to commence in the not to distant future!

i did not attend on Thursday as i was unwell, however i was so so happy to have shared in this news when Norma called me yesterday. Talking with her at length and sharing in her excitement, it was as if i was there myself!!!

Thank you Norma for calling with this great news! You should probably count your blessings i wasn't there actually.. may have asked the PM some embarrassing questions like.. um.. "What hair products do you use to get that shine?" :) You know i am messin' with you! ;)

i am missing everyone here that do the blog rounds and those of you in the bubble.
Just letting you all know that i think of you all often and i try and pop in from time to time and that you are not forgotten.

so quickly i want to thank you all dal cuore - from the heart for leaving those wonderful words of support and comfort on my last entry here, your thoughts helped me at the time i made this decision and continue to help me tremendously.
finding myself among creative souls i know you all understand the need for taking a break.

although i have not picked up a brush since making my decision to take some time to recuperate and rest, my creative expression it seems will not be quieted, how can it be when it is part of your soul and what it is you do comes from and is felt in the heart, so during this time when energy has permitted, i have engaged in a little writing and dabbled with some photography.

i will eventually get around to those tardy replies, i hope and trust you all understand this also.

just a quick note letting you all know

this will be my last post for a while and i don't know for how long.

i am ok, however feel i need to take a break for a while, and collect myself so i can take up painting with renewed energy, positiveness and inspiration something that i am very much lacking in at present.

i will certainly miss doing this but feel it best to try and recuperate and get some needed rest and some sunshine as i have found myself very exhausted with many late nights with very little sleep painting these works and others over the last few months.

this upsets me because painting has provided me with such joy, and i am at my happiest when doing so and as such will miss it.

pushing through with very little energy, motivation and inspiration left, i worked on this last painting today so i could at the very least post it up to complete this series. i don't think there are anymore Moonlight Ladies to paint here, that need to what i call - 'come out'!

thanking all of you who have been so very kind in providing support here and on RB, i have very much appreciated the time you all take to leave your positive comments of encouragement on my paintings and i will certainly miss this support.

having said this, i am still answering emails and i will try and visit blogs and keep in touch on RB with those of you i have come to know when i can, as this is also something which fills me with great joy as i also love to provide support and encouragement in return.

i guess this is a nice work to finish with as it is my wish.

The picture above is where i am currently at.

This second attempt at a self portrait has given me little rest over the last few days.

I feel there is still much work to do to complete it.

I tried to start this again the night before last, however realised it was impossible for me to even contemplate picking up a brush due to the intense concentration and emotions experienced with the first portrait.

There were many lessons learnt i felt through the first painting and after some thought, restless sleep thinking about what needed to be tackled, and after a little rest yesterday afternoon, i'm giving it another go... improving it in areas which i felt needed more careful attention.

I am posting here my progress so far, so as to remember this for next time.

It's a more controlled render than the first, and has a different 'spirit', nevertheless it is also an experience and am building on my skills in watercolour.

There is some pressure when posting a work in progress, and this is a lesson also, one i welcome as with all my wips. Having said that, this one i feel most vulnerable about, however it is something i am compelled to push myself through at the moment despite how tired i feel.

I want to thank those of you who were so kind to leave thoughts on my first portrait, here and on RB, and my replies to you each individually are pending - for this i sincerely apologise! I felt very vulnerable and exposed posting it, so your encouragement and kindness by way of these supportive comments have gone a long way in making me feel a little stronger to start this one.

It is very difficult to know when to stop working on a painting - this was one of the many lessons today and over the last 24 hours it seems.

I worked on it some more and perhaps should have left it alone, living with it before making any further adjustments or decisions.

Each painting provides an opportunity to learn about ones self...about their ability... about their faith in what they do... about their thought processes... for me now it is more than just the painting it seems... and this also was the lesson.

I was most distressed over this yesterday and last night when i posted this here, perhaps feeling vulnerable as it was my first serious attempt at a self portrait and in a medium i still know very little about.

These are my thoughts which i leave here.

Trevor has been more than generous featuring me in this art publication when some of my Watercolour Ladies appeared in the section Lang’s Gallery supporting beginning and emerging Australian artists last year.

My first painting for 2009 has me dearly wishing it was not something inspired by such tragedy.
My mood and those of many others not conducive to painting whatsoever as each day over the last week this sad news has filled our homes that being the tragic loss of 209 beautiful souls at last count.

My paints were packed yesterday, not knowing what to paint,

so i painted my thoughts and prayers

reaching out to those who are in pain.

Opening Night held at
The Terrace Room, National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour

The Combined Art Societies of Sydney are honoured to have the
Governor of NSW,
Her Excellency
Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO as its Patron.

Her Excellency extended that honour in favouring us with her presence on Opening Night on Friday 23rd January, 2009 and we were very much inspired by her words of encouragement with regard to dedicating ourselves to art and its creation.

Soheir Ehinger and I enjoyed our night immenseley despite not picking up any awards ourselves and were delighted and excited to mix and mingle with the honorary guests including our

Invited Judge John Wilson FRAS

Congratulations to all who won awards.

To David Lake A.R.A.S. a member of Oatley 101 Society of Artists who was awarded
'Artist of the Year'.

Roslyn Psakis who won 'Best In Show' for her beautiful painting "Little Smooth Shell".

I would like to also especially mention and congratulate

Freda Surgenor, who received a Commendation for her spectacular painting "Fruit Blend" and Marion Chapman fellow Redbubbler receiving a Commendation for her painting in the Miniatures "Bassist". It was wonderful to finally meet Marion on the night as we have been supporting each other on RB.

The holiday season is almost over and it will again be time for the Societies to kick start a brand new year.

look what i've got!

Celebrating my recent sale had me making a bee line to
Eckersley’s Art Supplies in Sydney yesterday in 40 degree Celsius heat,

that was not going to stop me however, determined to find it as i had
never been there before, so with the Gregory's in hand i discovered

Art Heaven!

thought i’d treat myself to the largest roll of Arches 300 gsm CP paper i could find,

it's 1150mm x 6000mm.

Eckerley's had 6 meters of it in stock, so i bought the whole lot,
and of course it was on sale – Perugina was one happy girl.

i am in love with this roll!

have to honour it by making a slideshow of this important milestone below!

i know...i know...i'm crazy!

when you're happy you do crazy things.
Buffy was excited for me also!

Now... what to do with it

Paint on it why of course!

The Photo & Artz Works Gallery

Culburra Beach NSW

Gallery owner and Director Noel Elliot established a photo and art gallery in February of 2006 in Culburra Beach, NSW. The gallery exhibits some of his own work, photography and art, and he also supports new and emerging artists.

A few weeks ago after meeting each other at a Redbubble lunch (organised by Rose Moxon), he invited me to exhibit some of my works, 2 of which now hang in his boutique style gallery.

This afternoon he called with some very exciting news, that my large work Beneath Blue Mountain Gums - A Contemporary Piece had been sold.

Many thanks to you Noel for giving me this wonderful opportunity to exhibit my work.

I am thrilled for us both and am delighted this piece, has made its way to the home it was meant to be in. It's the ultimate validation - you cannot put a price on this kind of satisfaction - it's awesome!

i so wanted to finish this before the seasonal festivities.

I am entering the
CASS - Combined Art Societies of Sydney
The 'Art of Sydney' Awards
and today is the day my entries are due.
So i have been working under pressure to get this finished, having done so 'in the nick of time' this morning.

i took a photo of this classic Jag earlier in the year, it's just rusting away in our neighbourhood street much to my horror!
I thought it would make a great picture to accompany a letter i wrote to a friend a while ago titled,

'life is a bitumen road
people are the cars'

Wanting to give a car a go, (my brother would be proud as there is no bigger petrol head than he living on the planet) i thought there was no better one to try than this.

Using masking fluid i wrote, more like scrawled, those words over the top before painting.

Let me say writing with this stuff isn't easy and it had its challenges.

i have submitted 6 paintings which i hope will be selected to feature in this annual exhibition.

A year on the blog has come to an end,
so i write to you now in hope that i send,
This message of thanks which i type from the heart,
to help me prepare for the New Year which starts.

A great year it was, as i cast my eye back.
I can absolutely say that i gave it a crack.
Oils, acrylics and a landscape or two,
a brand new series called Le Donne in Blu.
January passed with not much of any art,
just goals that were written to ensure a good start.
Frightened, scared, limited computer skills too,
0 8 and my thoughts made their official debut.

Protestations voiced, no names will i mention,
his words of support, no doubt of good intention.
Motivated, inspired and ready to show,
perugina was prepared to give it a go.

The year slow to start kicked off with a nude,
acrylic in brown ‘bodacious’ the review.
My first work in progress a vase that was black.Some florals, gums, and a lady sitting back.

Now March was exciting a series anew,
eight watercolour ballerinas made their debut.
Prima, Brava and Curtain Call made,
Encore, Stanca and Si Riposa now stayed.

Pink tulle gowns and points, performed pirouettes,
for the people who watched them, they’d never forget.
As they danced on Arches which served as their stage,
in various poses their audience engaged.

A holiday was had in the midst of all this,
Soldiers Point where i stayed made painting such bliss.
My passions indulged here were indeed smart,
a crab meant for pasta was turned into art.

Blue Swimmer for Dinner,a painting unknown,
of seagulls on sand,
and thongs left unowned.
This holiday a creative person’s delight,
painting and drawing from morning till night.

April and May were the busiest by far,
there were pumpkins, watercolour ladies
and miniature jars.A day spent with David,
obsessions with vintage themes.
The people on forums,
no doubt did they scream,
‘No more perugina for we’ve seen enough!’
Of vases and miniatures, we need some new stuff.
So off i did go to do my own thing,
to see what new thoughts
i would have now to bring.

What to do with my ballet girls dancing in pink.
A book for little girls was what I did think.
Le Belle Ballerine is now a nice book,
for those who not know, i ask you to look.

HERE

June saw the start of the gums without trunks,
leaves painted yellow and green missing chunks.
Concerned that they looked like sardines from afar,
asking all those i knew to view how bizarre.

July had me enter my first major comp,
i knew i should try and give it a shot.
A Sculptor called Alan he wondered around,
and thought that my crab looked quite safe and sound.
To my utter surprise was given a commended,
all in all i thought it quite splendid.

July was a month meeting artists of note,
see Workshop in Oil with John Wilson unquote.
There was Alan at the Annual and Artist’s Palette magazine,
where my Watercolour Ladies featured for me was a dream.

Coco Kiss in August wins another award,
my gorgeous girl i’m sure in Heaven applauds.
i miss her still for she was my mate,
here at home as i painted her company great.

August sees other surprises in store,
a commission of sorts too hard to ignore.
Announced later on and to work i must tend,
for extensions aren’t granted and time i must spend.

There are series known and ones that debuted,
Watercolour Ladies and Instruments that continue.
Suggestions for some to feature on mugs,
To those all i say is, i smile and i shrug.

My blogs there are many and some are now private,
To view these my mates are only invited.
My works there were many created this year,
Last count i think 50 perhaps more it's feared.
i would like to see these together in one go,
i hope you like the above slideshow.

A lover of Norman sees me painting a God!Two graphites, an oil and then art comes to a halt.
My furry boy Buffy not well he does fair,
with everyone helping with thoughts and their prayers.

With the year closing fast i’ll have to be quick,
with the clacking of keys and mouse that i click.
To upload this poem which reviews this past year,
i thank those that helped me along you’re so dear.

It’s now i make mention the support i have known,
thus far on my travels in art that has grown.

i’m really quite blessed.

Shot with her pint-sized fisheye lomo using 35 mm film, Juilee was able to keep in with the Bubble theme capturing key moments at a casual gathering graciously hosted by Rose Moxon.

Thank you Rose for thinking of me and inviting me along to your home for what was a great afternoon mingling and meeting with some of the people that make redbubble such a wonderful place! It was suggested we try and have a bubblemeet as often as we can!

The luncheon was held for Martin - 'head honcho' who was here in Sydney to attend the Open Universities Fast Thinking Inaugural Innovation Awards - redbubble was awarded the runner-up prize in the Digital Innovation category. It was fantastic to meet with you Martin and along with our congratulations… most were impressed and totally floored especially when you demonstrated to all, your skills in that domestic activity 'shirked by most,' women in particular - ironing... and we have the photographic evidence to prove that 'a man' can indeed iron! In fact Rose was surprised she even owned an ironing board! LOL

Blocking in colour at first had me utilizing brushes and as I started to contour the facial features used my fingers rubbing in colour as well as wiping it away with a sponge.
He looks a little rustic as a result, which I don’t mind.

I may add to this in the future... however for the 'present moment' am quite happy to live with him as he is.

Have gone back to my old habits of tearing my paper into thin strips.

i may save on paper, unfortunately framing can be costly when ordered custom made.

It also seems that with the official arrival of summer and all the beautiful blooms available and flourishing in the garden sees me very much inspired, returning to painting flowers big time.

I am hoping that during the holiday break I can spare a little more time devoting myself to these and adding to my

'for the love of flowers'.

It feels like i have been away from them for ages.

i feel an agapanthus coming on!

Gardenias are also on the list.

Tonight i have spent a contemplative hour painting this watercolour which i will give Fiona, my sister-in-law, who has been left traumatised and distraught by her loss of her much beloved Tara of 15 years and the tragic way it occurred.

Last Monday 24th November, 2008 while Tara was sitting on the veranda of her home catching the last rays of the sun, sitting by her favourite lavender bush, two Bull Mastiffs ran into the property and savagely mauled her between them.

Fiona watched and tried in vain to save Tara sustaining injuries herself in this attack.

When the dogs were finished, Fiona was left holding Tara who died in her arms.

Poor little Tara was just too little to save herself despite the fight she put up.

This incident has angered all of us.

These marauding dogs were left to roam the streets unleashed and unsupervised!

I have spent most of the last week emailing the Council, Local Paper (who are now writing a story about it) State & Federal Members in the area, making sure these people are made accountable for all that occurred, as well as checking on Fiona most days.

Fiona's injuries are on the mend, however she has been left devastated and is traumatised, suffering from constant 'flash backs'.

I cannot begin to imagine what this was like for her in that moment and those in the street that witnessed it.

Christmas card 2008

Deciding to continue this 'blue Angel of Peace' theme each year making it my signature Christmas Card sees me exploring a stained glass effect this year, as opposed to last year where my Angel bore a close resemblance to my ‘Ladies and the Musical Instruments They Play’

intricate in design and time consuming, it was very relaxing to paint and i truly felt a sense of peace and calm working on it with my 'O' round brush - yes the same one utilised on 'the Garden God II' ...could have another painting in it if i am lucky!

This has taken forever and there are still some minor adjustments to make.

My Inspiration

Here at my home, in my

'Upstairs Garden'
I have a large stone plaque with a face cast into it, which hangs on the western wall of the house, catching the last rays of sun each day.

He is the protector of my Upstairs Garden
Although there is no beautiful young naked maiden standing there in front of his gargoyle-like face, safely flaunting herself before his lifeless eyes…
I have nevertheless called him my “Garden God” in homage to Lindsay and his work.

Straight From The Horse's Mouth

Tonight has been spent preparing for
'the race that stops a nation'

That once a year event which has all the fillies excited.

Where hours are spent vetoing every item of clothing in the wardrobe and has every partner horrified at the prospect of having to answer 'that question' dreaded by all partners…
"Does My B** Look Big In This?"
Also deliberating on which shoes to wear with …and of course there's the all important decision about that accessory which can make or break the entire ensemble…THE HAT!

Whether to try for that Audrey Hepburn –ridiculously oversized 'My Fair Lady' look!
(Assuring your derrière will not rival that of the horses - a sure bet on the day!)

or just go the fascinator 'chook look!'

All important decisions…

All that remained this evening was studying the Form Guide.

The barriers drawn… the jockeys...the trainers… track conditions...dead weight vs. top weight...

bloodlines... and the poor animals form to be able to make the 3200 metre distance.

Tipping a science unto itself…so...with that said...

This is where i am currently with

the Garden God II

Perhaps the photo above will give some indication as to the size of this work.

My size 'O' round TAKLON brush has served me well and up until now and it has seen me through many of my works since starting watercolours in 2007 and remains one of my favourites still.

Ron in my watercolour group is always astounded that i utilise such a small brush and has taken to asking, "Why don't you use a bigger brush?!" whenever he sees me, regardless of whether i am painting or not.

I like to use small brushes, so i shrug and laugh. Perhaps i feel comfortable with it because like a pencil, i feel i have some control.

I am in a panic about it (the brush) making it through this piece as its bristles are wearing thin, it will be a sad day when it finally gives up.

This last picture above is the closest representing the true colour of the piece as utilising the flash mode on the camera tends to bleach out the colour.

With all the leaves completed now, all that remains is touching up various areas putting in some darks behind the foliage.

This morning sees me a little further down the road.

With more to come later this afternoon.

Finally I have settled into my latest WIP and its moving along. Looking back when updating its progress i can't believe this was started back in August.

Having no recollection of colours used had me playing the guessing game, “What colour am I?”

Some colours are obvious, others gave me some grief. This will teach me to record this in future.

Normally i don't like to drop a project as i have done in this case, and prefer to work day after day until its completion.

In Italian (as I often find myself thinking in these terms) if i break from a project, i lose “la mano”- my hand i.e. the flow of what i am doing and like handwriting on a page, the slope of it changes, therefore breaking the visual rhythm of it. So in picking this up again today, it is hoped that i will find my rhythm once more so the next few weeks can be dedicated to completing it.

My need to return to familiar territory in subject matter at least, after what seems a long break was necessary to ease back into getting creative again.

Perhaps the relaxed Donna Blu - Blue Lady – serene in her slumber, is a manifestation of the inner peace i am lacking presently and so desperately crave.

Instead of watercolour, with its unpredictability and capriciousness adding to my frustration , i chose to get out those beautiful smooth oil paints purchased a few months back helping me to unwind.

Pushing the lush paint around on the canvas with a large round soft brush, the swirling movements of the ultramarine blue and titanium white paint as it mixed forming her curls, giving them a delicate textural quality, (not evident here in the photo) was almost hypnotic, the rhythmic movements mesmerising… and now when I look back…

My art work has come to a sudden halt over the last month.

Moving my art space, and with all that transpired this last week with Buffy and although i have still uploaded the latest news into my blog, it still feels like i have been away for an eternity.

It would be remiss if i didn't thank all who have supported me during this time with your messages, thoughts and prayers for Buffy - from my heart, it helped tremendously!

Hopefully, with the worst behind us, with Buffy on the improve everyday, i can settle into my regular routine here at home, getting back to the painting, and finishing those WIPs started a few months ago.

November will be an extremely busy month starting with the Rhododendron Festival Annual Art Exhibition, Blackheath, Blue Mountains, as well as being an invited artist in the Oatley 101 Society of Artists, November Gallery Exhibition.

November also sees me working on a submission and commissioned project which needs to be completed by months end, more news on this later.

With so much crammed into these last months of 2008, and with some personal health issues as well, it had me having to make some hard decisions last couple of months.

For one, having to pull out of the Northern Expressions Annual Christmas Exhibition in Fairlight, Manly.
However I am looking forward to my involvement next year and wish the participating artists all the very best for a successful show - hope to see everyone on opening night!

Also, not being able to uphold my commitment to creating the Christmas Card this year for Retina Australia - this probably saddened me the most. Graeme, President of Retina Australia, was very understanding and we have reset this goal for 2009 simply offering me words of comfort, "Things will happen in their own good time and it wasn't meant to be for 2008"

Thank you Graeme, for your understanding and patience and I hope 2009 is a better year for us both!

So with the Christmas decs, cards and paper already making their appearance in the retail industry signalling to all that the chaos has officially started, and with the summer break looming near, the need to tie up these loose ends so 2009 can start afresh is imperative.

Now, hopefully it’s back to the art!

A Tribute to Norman

Those of you who thought the first
‘Garden God’
was scary and ugly and told me so, and those too scared to leave a comment perhaps because there was nothing good to say...

Check this out!

My first painting was truly a ‘muck about’ and it was too much fun and had me totally engaged over the two days it took.

This is a serious second attempt at it this time.

With the colours chosen and drawing properly set out,
this does not provide any guarantee of success as there is still a long way to go before its completion.

However, I am pleased with how it is progressing.

Each painting is a learning exercise in any case, with skills built upon, aiding the next project.

His eyes are intense and his gaze fierce!
Now this is nightmare material and makes the first one look tame!

I still see the beauty within...

perhaps it is in his strength of stare which engages me!

One of my many favourite watercolour works by Norman Lindsay.

i bought a print of this many years ago and each time i visit Lindsay's home in Faulconbridge in the Blue Mountains, which is now a Gallery and Museum run by the National Trust housing many of his works, i immediately make a beeline to this.

Loving the innocence and unashamed abandon of the beautiful young girl who is full of life and joy, with arms outstretched, standing before this grotesque, lascivious looking, small lifeless stone figure in the garden.

To see this work in real life and to walk about the grounds of the former home of this most renowned Australian artist who has produced a vast body of work in different media, including pen drawing, etching, watercolour, oil and sculptures in concrete and bronze and ship building, is for me heaven and a must stop on my way to Katoomba and Leura.

Here at home, in my 'Upstairs Garden' i have a large stone plaque with a face cast into it, which hangs on the western wall of the house, catching the last rays of sun each day.

Although there is no beautiful young naked maiden standing there in front of his gargoyle-like face, safely flaunting herself before his lifeless eyes… i have nevertheless called him my 'Garden God”\' in homage to Lindsay and his work.

Wanting to loosen up in my painting style i played around yesterday using my Garden God as the basis for this work below. I wasn't planing to get this far with it as it was just an experiment in colour and shapes. So after two days mucking about, this is the resulting work.

I have yet to decide whether i will paint the remaining ivy leaves or leave them in negative as a white space.

He is one great big ball of fluff...it is his beauty and his curse!

He hates to be brushed resulting in very matted fur and as a result needs to be clipped each year under a general anaesthetic.

It is not a pretty sight, but i adore him just the same.

Well i didn't give it away, however i have cropped it quite dramatically from the original sketch and dulled her hair by washing back the colour.

There were things that went right with this and those...well...that didn't go to plan.

On a positive note...

I am keen on attempting this again and to perhaps start on some ideas for a series in the same Italianate style.

Had fun manipulating the image in a photo programme and have included some of them below.

Well looks as though I just couldn't stay away from my easel. Would rather paint than watch television anyday.

My latest instalment tonight sees me still working on her hair and some background.

It is slow going, howeveri am a patient person and love to be transported into this magical colourful world which reveals itself to me slowly.

my work is done for today.

I spent much of the morning sketching out the rest of this which I will not reveal just yet because of its raw state and my undecidedness in its design.

I just jump in, ruled by the heart and not my head in the planning and watercolour is much about the planning.

Even those wonderful loose watery works which look as if they have been painted with spontaneous abandon by top artists are well planned and thought out.

I love stained glass windows and would like to achieve this here. Remembering for me this is also very much a learning exercise in colour, design and the handling of watercolour washes.

Putting this out here, as it progresses has me feeling vulnerable and exposed. When i embark on a work in progress i take my shots and post them up as i go. I do not have the work sitting here finished with photos waiting to be posted at intervals -this is, as it happens.

Work today consisted of more sketching trying to get as much of her hair finished and getting a start on her torso.

I'm going to persevere with this.

My work continues and I'm not very happy with its direction. I am trying to capture that Italianate look in the figure and also in colouring.

The poor planning in the composition has resulted in damaging the delicate surface of the watercolour paper from all the erasing.

Although not very visible here...there are very fine craze lines in the watercolour work which IRL spoils the pure and fresh look of a watercolour - an important lesson.

I've decided to crop the top of the picture so her hair seems less voluminous. I will keep going for a little longer however i have almost reached that point i am going to give it away!

I always admire those watercolourist that can achieve a loose work with beautiful mingling of colours.

Continuing to capture my beautiful boy Chocky and restricting myself to a limited palette once again. I continue my experimentation in shape and colour allowing the watercolour medium do its job.

I regret not using my regular Arches paper, however as this was purely an exercise in working out composition and colour scheme.

What I Do Best is an apt title for this work. Chocky very rarely sleeps and would rather be coursing through the house at warp speeds!

Being a two year old Burmese (& greyhound cross), is it any wonder i prefer him this way - asleep! Hence avoiding trouble.

I always admire those watercolourist that can achieve a loose work with beautiful mingling of colours.

This was sketched out last night while watching the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games with Chocky asleep on my lap.

This morning i set to transferring this onto watercolour paper. My aim, to render it quickly and loosely exploring colour and allowing it to form the shapes and contours of his back.

He has the biggest set of ears, we are always having a joke saying, he still needs to grow into them.

Funnily enough it's his ears I am happiest with in this painting.

This was inspired by a comment made on a forum recently and was determined to use this energy in a positive way.

It started last week as a doodle on scrap paper whilst on the phone.

Refining the drawing in my watercolour group last week and today after an exciting weekend, with Second Prize for 'Coco Kiss', I've knuckled down getting back to some work and have a sketch close to what I feel happy with, it goes without say however, this can change when the paints come out!

Those who know me, can imagine how thrilled I was to receive an award for this work.

There were many exceptional works from the 150 works entered by many talented artists.

This award I dedicate to my gorgeous girl Coco, she lost her life quite unexpectedly last year leaving me devastated under unusual and unfortunate circumstances.

I drew this shortly after she died as I felt compelled to pick up my pencil in order to help me with my grief. I am also sure that she was with me every step of the way.

Freda Surgenor won First Prize for her Acrylic work Moored In Shallow Water which is testament to her dedication and skill in creating these realistic works.

Mara Marston Boni won Third Prize for her work "Morning Light"

workshop with John

John Wilson is a highly respected and sought after Australian Multi Award Winning Artist and tutor.

I have been talking about this long awaited workshop for what seems like ages!

Today, albeit out of my depth in landscape painting and oils and totally awestruck, I finally met the man who's artworks I adore!

How could I not love them when they

depict the Blue Mountains I love.

Not only a talented multi award winning artist being able to capture their unique magnificence on canvas but also lucky to reside up in the mountains.

This one that features above is the small version John painted today as the demonstration which was painted from scratch, guiding us through the workshop.

Being my first ever workshop and my second landscape ever, in a workshop meant for those who have mastered the basics in oil and want to build on their knowledge of colour especially as it specifically pertains to the Australian landscape.

It covered tone, temperature, colour mixing, composition, atmosphere, highlights, reflected lights and reflections.

It would probably be very accurate to state, I struggled through this and was highly stressed pretty much from the get go!

I think by the time we had a break for lunch i was ready to go home reaching info overload!

forget the coffee, I need a real drink!

Norma, who I sat next to, was muttering to herself throughout, thoroughly enjoying herself and I just kept saying over & over in my mind Patricia, just get on with it!

Not to mention that large 'pink blob' of a colour that appeared on my palette not knowing from where it came, even shocking John... this was the moment I asked God for Divine Intervention

or at least something that resembled a tree!

Nevertheless, i did survive as best as I could, learning a little more along the way.

I will work on this a little more in the next few days, starting with getting rid of that terrible orange in the tree behind the main one.

During the workshop, I tried to take down as many notes as possible and will take some time tonight while it is still fresh in my mind to refine them so i can perhaps attempt this again when recovered from this extremely intense workshop today.

I was on the Mount Everest of learning curves! But by the end i was so tired and so lost! Even as adults you can get to a stage in information absorption...where like a risotto...you know when it's cooked!

It certainly was a wonderful learning experience on many levels and it was just so great to finally meet 'the man' behind those magnificent works.

I was thrilled to have been chosen to feature in Lang's Gallery, a section of Artist's Palette magazine seeking to give Australian's producing art an opportunity to showcase their work, whether they be accomplished or emerging.

In the this current issue, Lang's Gallery features my ongoing series of Watercolour Ladies, four of which appear in this popular Australia wide publication. Adorabella, Alexia, Nadia and of course my Signature Lady representing the series Pamela.

Norma Jones, my watercolour tutor, gave of her time and expertise today to go through colour mixing techniques and her knowledge of painting the Australian landscape in oil with me, in an all day painting session in her studio at home.

Realising that the upcoming Workshop with John Wilson would be very advanced for me, having no experience in painting landscapes let alone Australian landscapes. Norma thought I would benefit from a quick run down 'crash course!'

I had a wonderful day painting this from one of her many photo references. We painted together, each setting up a canvas side by side.

This private tutorial starting with equipment, laying the paint out, through to sketching and painting. The only thing we didn’t do was sign the bottom of each of our works on completion.

I was not expecting to leave with an actual oil painting of an area i love and painting this today had me feeling quite melancholy and with distant sounds of the Currawongs i was transported there if only momentarily through this painting porthole!

A big thank you Norma, for your generosity,time, kindness, patience and passing of your knowledge and most of all your support. Her love of art transfers itself and is very contagious. I like you Norma, love it all, and it is as you say... "there is just not enough time!"

Norma Jones, is a Sydney based artist.

She is currently an active member in the Bankstown Art Society where she tutors and exhibits, as well as other art societies in the Sydney metropolitan area.

Her early academic training was as a commercial artist and dress designer.

Norma has a passion for art and has worked across a variety of mediums including watercolours, oils, pastels and charcoal. This enthusiasm transfers itself in her classes and her vast experience is a valuable asset to those she instructs.

Norma has a brilliant eye for draftsmanship and her knowledge of composition, colour and painting skills combine adding interest and drama to her works in both contemporary and traditional styles.

Her works have been successfully exhibited in Sydney and rural New South Wales winning numerous awards.

Norma is sort after for workshops and demonstrations in both watercolours and oils.

Her work is represented in many private and public collections here in Australia and overseas.

I was thrilled to have been awarded a Commendation for this work

and also having the opportunity to meet Alan Somerville the man behind the sculptures

‘The Manning Horses’ in the Manning Building, Pitt Street Sydney, ‘Bronze PHOENIX’ here in Paul Keating Park, Bankstown and the statues that flank the west entrance to the Anzac Bridge here in Sydney ‘Bronze WWI Aus/NZ DIGGERS.’

He was the guest judge this year, at the Golden Anniversary Annual Art Awards, for the Bankstown Art Society.

With 180 works entered, this event has had its exhibiting members excited for the last 6 months with everyone painting madly up until the very last minute.

this event has had its members excited for the last 6 months with everyone painting madly up until the very last minute. It's fantastic to see this exhibition grow from strength to strength with lots of wonderful works.

The exhibition runs until 23rd July.

Much volunteer work goes into these events by the commitee members and others.

They do a wonderful job fostering the arts in our area.

what a wonderful thing support is!!

When you have the support of family and friends you feel as though you can do almost anything!

Painting the background on these is addictive.

Playing with Masking Fluid & Watercolour Washes

Masking fluid has never really excited me. This yellow stinky liquid rubber drying

before i can get it anywhere near the paper, only resulting in having to throw away the brush, really infuriates me!

Listening to others say time and time again, how they love masking fluid, even buying the most expensive one on the market only to leave it in the bottom of my art bag as i don't really care for the stuff taking into account my experiences thus far which left me saying in reply "What a croc!"

That is until I watched its application by the talented hand of Nicholas Simmons.

Very casually going through his arsenal of brushes and other weapons of choice before commencing one of his masterpieces in his DVD Innovative Watermedia, he generously goes through his process beginning with preparing paper, right through to the signing and stamping of his completed work.

Thank you NNG for providing many artists with an insight into your methods some of which i am having a play with in this latest WIP.

Sticking with a familiar subject at least provides me with some comfort whilst out of my depth with the process. Baby steps here... but quite excited to see what i can achieve and where i can go.

As you can see the masking fluid behaved. Soap really is a wonderful thing!

My only dilema is i use liquid soap here and wanting to adhere strictly to tip given on Nick's DVD had to crack my only bar of soap, the Chanel - No 5 of course I swear! With the added benefit of masking "the stink" as well! :D

Chocky started out keen to help and to watch this morning... it was all too much after about 10 minutes!

What kind of an "artistic director" is he?

I do adore his company while I paint even though he sleeps half the time.

This was a great exercise extending my skills in watercolour.

I'm quite happy with the results and having worked through this am keen on trying another, to approach the background with a little more gusto.

The progress on this one is slow, the centres are proving to be more involved, however I do enjoy this as it has a calming effect, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

There is something mysterious about engaging in painting, like entering another Universe that is not part of this world.

Anyone who has been following the series Rolf Harris Star Portraits will know the format.

In each program, a known celebrity is chosen to have their portrait painted by three professional artists. Each painting that celebrity in their own unique style. We watch the painting process and at the end the portraits are revealed to the celebrity, where they will have to choose their favourite portrait to keep.

In this instance...Buffy AKA The Killa Chinchilla and my 'STAR' was chosen by American artist Nora Sallows to include in a series of oil paintings called 'Cattitudes' Cats with Attitude.

Buffy with those looks of his was immediately chosen as he is definitely a Cat With Plenty of Attitude! He even comes with his own warning label in the Vet data bases here in Sydney, i kid you not!

i was thrilled to finally get the painting home after it going lost in the US Mail...giving Nora and myself much to panic about. Arriving safely... you will agree that she has absolutely 'nailed' his likeness.

We had our own reveal here with 'The Star' present, and although he did not have to chose which portrait he liked best, i was thrilled with it and will cherish it forever. It really captures the essence of Bu.

Buffy has always been a feisty ball of fur, and has had a fighting spirit since day one, when as a kitten and only after a few days of having him home, i almost lost him as he was suffering from a nasty viral infection.

He is 16 this year and despite all the veterinary intervention year in and year out, you can still see that fighting spirit in those eyes.

Sweetmango...You cannot imagine the relief in the end for Nora and myself when it finally arrived... and believe me this was not an easy task getting Buffy to sit still and have his photo taken with his portrait... bribing was involved!
It was more of a case of... Give it to me NOW!
I'm absolutely thrilled with how Nora captured his likeness.

He hospitalised one of the vet nurses at the vet he goes too... almost mauling her arm off!

Thanks Helm... It was panic stations there for a while and had poor Nora fretting like mad and me in tears!
But it all worked out well in the end and we are all happy... except perhaps Buffy who was sick of having to sit his toosh on the cold glass coffee table while I bribed him in order to take the purfect photo!
Perhaps this explains his intense stare...lol

In watercolour class today i started my re-do.

I am admitting to my obsession with this vase and my determination to make this work!Approaching this starting with the centres this time rather than plonking them over the top of an already painted flower.

This was the downfall of the first version, failing to plan out the work and not thinking out the process.

re worked

After some re working of the centres I feel it is closer to what I had envisaged in my mind.

Not having a reference photo to go by, relying on memory, and these vases and urns i have around the house makes it all the more difficult and challenging at the same time.

I am happier at least that the centres have been toned down and now have some depth to them. They were just too loud and lacked sensitivity. Now, I feel it's going in the right direction and strikes a more melodious tone in keeping with the rest of the composition.

This alteration however resulted in having to paint some of the back petals stronger, using that delicious colour Permanent Rose to bring back some of the vitality of the first version, feeling it needed this, to lift it, and thus making for a nice contrast against all the blue.

I will paint this again from scratch, as i am not entirely happy with the centres looking like they have been re worked... Looking at it closely (IRL) it is a little lacklustre in that specific area, it does annoy me not having the freshness of a first watercolour application.

Well back to the easel with this one!

This was completed in watercolour group today

Not very happy with it in part particularly the centres and feel that it is spoilt - they are way to strong and take the focus away from the rest of the painting.

I do however like the composition and the colours as it is in keeping with the set of pictures painted previously so i have sketched this out again hoping to improve it second time around.
